Over 20,000 pairs of mittens are handmade each year at Winona ORC! We knit, cut, and sew Minnesota Mittens at our production facility at 1053 East Mark Street. We have a very unique manufacturing process and no two pairs are exactly alike!
Procedure:
Step 1: Two knitting machines knit the cotton and wool. The wool is never the same colors or patterns – making each pair unique!
Step 2: Clients manually cut the mittens to size (XS – XL available).
Step 3: One person sews the inner liner, and one person sews the outer liner.
Step 4: The liners are then stuffed together manually.
Step 5: The bottom edge is sewn together and an official tag is attached.
Step 6: The finished product is shipped nationally!
“Mittens with a mission: Our mittens are carefully cut and assembled by the workers at our Winona ORC, a sheltered workshop for people with disabilities. Each mitten is made from wool & cotton fabric or yarn, which remains after the sweater parts are cut. Sweaters for your hands…only from Winona, Minnesota.”
For more information on the mittens, contact Judie Foster-Lupkin, Executive Director of Winona ORC at jfoster-lupkin@winonaorc.org or (507)452-1855 Ext. 115. If you would like to buy a pair of mittens, please contact Winona ORC. Pick up or shipping available.
